The roots are bright shades of glowing yellow, thus the common name of Yellowroot! One single flower will emerge in the spring producing a fruit resembling a raspberry which will contain the seeds. Goldenseal was a popular remedy among Native Americans and was also used in many folklore recipes. The herb is now used, and trusted, worldwide for it’s many amazing benefits. Goldenseal contains the isoquinoline alkaloids: hydrastine, berberine, berberastine, hydrastinine, tetrahydroberberastine, canadine, and canalidine. Yellow Root can be propagated from root cuttings, or seed, taking 5 to 7 years to grow usable roots. In some areas, unethical harvesting of this plant has caused it’s numbers in the wild to decline. If foraging Goldenseal, never take the entire patch. Harvest fresh, wild seed to replant in nature and if the area you forage in is seeing a decline of Golden seal, consider giving it a few years to replenish.
