Also Called: Osier, Pussy Willow, White Willow, Witches' Aspirin, Withy, Tree of Enchantment, Saille, Salicyn Willow, Saugh Tree Healing Uses: The bark of white willow contains salicin, which is a chemical similar to aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid). In combination with the herb's powerful anti-inflammatory plant compounds (called flavonoids), salicin is thought to be responsible for the pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects of the herb. Warning: Use in persons with sensitivity to aspirin or other salicylate-containing drugs is cautioned. Use in persons with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is cautioned. (Disclaimer: If you have a chronic health condition or are taking prescription medication please consult your health care provider before using herbs).
